About the Student Support Center

The Student Support Center provides confidential counseling services for students (and faculty and staff concerned in students) on a wide range of matters relating to study or personal problem. If you are a student from foreign countries who cannot speak Japanese, please consult to International Student Counseling Office.

The Student Support Center (of Agency of Student Support and Disability Resources) was established in 2022, by reorganization of the Counseling Office (of the General Student Support Center), which was established in 2013. The Student Support Center has staff of three full-time Psychiatrists, thirteen full-time Clinical psychologists, three full-time Career Counselors, one Yogo Teacher, two part-time Clinical psychologists and one counselor for international students, and five assistant. Every year, about 800 students and staff come to the Student Support Center for counseling, and about 5,000 interviews are conducted.

Services and Activities

Services

  • Individual counseling on any problems of students, including academic problems, occupational problems, psychological problems, mental and physical health.
  • Consultation with faculty and staff regarding students.
  • Group counseling, encounter group, and other kinds of group work.
  • Conducting interviews by university physicians with the students who will take a leave of absence or re-enroll in the university.
  • Conducting interviews by university physicians with the students who will study abroad.
  • Crisis intervention.
  • Casework.
  • Holding orientations for incoming freshmen in cooperation with faculties.
  • Holding seminars or symposiums for enlightment to students and staff.
  • Holding seminars or symposiums for university counselors.

Investigation and Research

  • Investigation of adjustment problems of drop-outs, career problems, and emotional problems relating to mental health.
  • Investigation of student personnel services in connection with higher education.

Common Concerns

Student’s Common Concerns

For example, the center provides counseling to students who:

  • Are suffering in a relationship.
  • Would like to think about their own character.
  • Need someone to talk to about their sexual/gender identity.
  • Are worried about their relationship with their family.
  • Are not motivated to do research for some reason.
  • Are wondering whether to change their course of study.
  • Are suffering from depression or anxiety.
  • Are worried about employment or job-seeking activities.

For example, the center provides advice to faculty and staff members who:

  • Would like to consult with a counselor as to students of concern.
  • Would like to discuss how to interact with/relate to students.

University Physicians

University physicians provide counseling services to:

  • Students who come to the center for consultation: evaluating their mental and physical health, and if necessary, conducting interviews with them or referring them to medical institutions (they do not prescribe medication).
  • Students who will take a leave of absence or re-enroll in the university: conducting interviews with the students, if required.
  • Students who will study abroad: conducting interviews with the students, if required.
  • Faculty and staff members who provide support to students: conducting interviews with them to give advice on student health management.

International Student Counseling Office, along with Advising Lounge ‘KI-ZU-NA’, offers counseling/advising services to international students and researchers who have concerns about their academic studies or life in Japan.
